Conducts research in support of the research efforts of Youngstown State University as part of the research efforts of the ETC. Involves research and development in the use of advanced manufacturing technologies, specifically, additive manufacturing technologies, including, but not limited to, binder jetting and metal laser powder bed fusion technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD degree in an appropriate engineering discipline or related field with research experience in additive manufacturing. Demonstrated experience in obtaining external grant funds in support of advanced manufacturing research, specifically additive manufacturing.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in an appropriate engineering discipline or related field and experience with materials related standards that would be relevant to qualification protocols; experience using a variety of materials characterization methods including mechanical testing, microscopy, and analytical testing; experience with metal casting and metallurgical sample preparation. Understanding of unique challenges associated with the operation of small businesses. Familiarity with operations of 3D Systems, ExOne, or EOS systems. Experience in either ceramics, porous materials, or polymer processing techniques, and characterization commonly used in these fields.

Physical Requirements

In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this position will perform light work.

LIGHT: work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, requiring: (1) walking or standing to a significant degree; (2) sitting most of the time while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while constantly pushing or pulling materials even though the weight or the materials is negligible. (The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the guidance of the Program Director for Applied Research, engages in independent and collaborative research with both ETC and outside personnel on the use of additive manufacturing. This research may include materials characterization, process development in support of metal additive manufacturing qualification protocols and application of additively manufactured tooling for metal casting, and materials/process modeling and analysis.

Attends and actively supports scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings, and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, including STTR and SBIR submissions.

Pursues publication of research in peer reviewed journals and presents research results in local and national forums.

Evaluates the use of additive manufacturing for tooling in conventional manufacturing processes.

Works with internal and external partners, as well as guides and mentors students, on research projects as part of the technical effort; develops new proposals for research and obtains project support for new and/or continuing research activities.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs other related duties as assigned.
