About the Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is a large and diverse department in the Melbourne Medical School that undertakes research, postgraduate and undergraduate teaching within the University of Melbourne teaching hospitals. The Department of Medicine, St Vincent's Hospital is a large, research-active node of the Department. Research at the Department of Medicine, SVH encompasses basic, clinical, and applied research in a range of areas. The ultimate goal of our research is to improve the treatment of human disease. Driven by clinical questions, our work covers aspects of the basic mechanisms of biology and physiology, clinical and community-based epidemiology, and clinical trials for new therapies and devices. We have outstanding academic and professional staff, highly proficient in a diverse range of clinical, research, teaching and administrative skills.

About the Role The Research Fellow is designated for an academic clinician who provides academic leadership in the discipline of Medicine, within the University of Melbourne, Department of Medicine, St Vincent's Hospital. You will make significant and innovative contributions in the areas of academic leadership, research and teaching and will be expected to collaborate with other researchers within the Department of Medicine, and elsewhere within the University, nationally and internationally.

The fellowship is also suitable for a clinician returning from an overseas postdoctoral or clinical position and will only be offered once for each individual researcher with the aim that the researcher will go on to independent funding.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide guidance and actively contribute to improving the quality of medical education and training
  • Delivery of innovative educational programs
  • Make a significant contribution to the evaluation and renewal of curriculum design and innovation, including cross-disciplinary and translational approaches
  • Participant in research independently and as a member of a research team
  • About You You possess excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work individually and as part of a team and demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills, including in academic and applied environments. You have demonstrated superior organisational skills, including personal time management (including meeting project timelines and balancing competing demands) and organising projects involving people (including research participants, research staff, partners and collaborators).

    You will also have:

  • PhD qualifications in operations research, operations management, decision science, business administration, systems engineering, or logistics
  • Demonstrated excellent skills of project management and coordination with industry partners
  • Demonstrated high-level information management skills, including the ability to collect and collate information succinctly, accurately and reliably
  • The ability to undertake some travel including visiting collaborating institutions
