Description

Senior Research Associate

Lancaster Medical School Salary: £35,326 to £40,927 Closing Date: Monday 20 June 2022 Interview Date: Monday 04 July 2022 Reference: 0524-22

We wish to recruit a full time postdoctoral research associate for 2 years. You will join Lancaster Medical School to work with Dr Jemma Kerns and collaborators: Prof Griffiths (Warwick University), Prof Dawes (Exeter University) and Dr Van Arkel (Imperial) to explore the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a tool for monitoring changes to protein related to osteoporosis.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in vibrational spectroscopy.

This project is funded by the EPSRC, titled Digital Health: Prevention of osteoporosis through early monitoring of multiple measures of bone health in one device

The project aims to develop and evaluate the application of miniaturised Raman spectroscopy to the identification and monitoring of osteoporosis using a range of easily accessible materials. We will identify a population of people with a range of DXA scores, and with REC/HRA approval collect samples of hair, nail and urine samples. You will liaise with a leading Consultant Rheumatologist, based at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and colleagues to enable participant identification and sample collection. You will acquire Ramen spectral measurements from these samples, and analyse the data using multivariate analysis and classification tools, as appropriate.

Specifically, this project aims to identify how this technology could be delivered in a form accessible to women in their own locality (e.g. a pharmacy/GP/home). This local ability to identify and measure will form part of a new approach to the prevention of osteoporosis through early diagnosis and monitoring.

You will join a top 15-UK university with excellent laboratory facilities and situated in a vibrant research environment.

For more information please contact Dr Jemma Kerns, j.kerns@lancaster.ac.uk https:// www. lancaster.ac.uk/fhm/about-us/people/jemma-kerns

You will join us on an indefinite contract however this role remains contingent on external funding which is for 24 months at this time, starting 1 September 2022.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
