Senior Research Associate in Additive Manufacturing and Data Analytics

(Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on a EPSRC funded research programme for the development of a High Throughput Laser Array Based Additive Manufacturing Technology.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

  • develop build file software tools for layer interpretation, machine control, and scanner drivers for a be-spoke laser array based PBF AM system;
  • develop the software solutions for interpreting CAD slice data and converting this into 3MF based machine executable build files to optimise and control laser array-based scanning strategies;
  • support the development and implementation of a Big Data management system designed by academic partners at Nottingham University;
  • employ unique Big Data analytical tools provided by industrial partners used to examine the large volume of in-process and post-process data to identify defects in order to build statistical correlation models that will establish a defect prediction model and enable optimisation of process parameters;
  • support the creation of test parts for analysis by industrial collaborators;
  • support the creation of process data to enable comparison with existing commercial AM systems;
  • support development of a cost benefit analysis of the new AM process;
  • write up research work for presentation and publication at local meetings and international conferences;
  • continually update knowledge and understanding in field of data analytics in AM of metals;
  • translate knowledge of advances in AM based data analytics into further research activity;
  • manage own research components and administrative activities within the overall AM research project, with guidance if required from the PI;
  • assist in the preparation of reports to external bodies, e.g. research collaborators, EPSRC and academic partners for contractual purposes;
  • communicate AM data analytics and AM process performance of a specialist or highly technical nature to industrial and academic audiences;
  • undertake exploitation reviews to support the impact and translation of the research outputs.
  • The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a PhD in a relevant discipline. Applicants should have significant relevant postdoctoral research experience at the level of Research Associate, or equivalent experience.

    Salary Ranges: Senior Research Associate: £43,414 - £54,949

    Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
