Job Description Summary:

This is a part-time Senior Research Associate position, focused on data analysis, available in the Department of Global Health with Dr. Emily Smith's research group. The research group focuses on how nutrition and infection shape healthy birth, growth, and development across the lifecycle.

The Senior Research Associate will work on a number of research projects including those aimed at understanding the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and mechanisms of adverse pregnancy outcomes and an international, multi-site study to redefine hemoglobin reference values (anemia) in pregnancy. This position requires data analysis skill and knowledge of RShiny as well as some coding experience.

This experienced researcher carries out research/development activities by using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, analyze and report data activities. Using a wide degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position are to make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results, with limited guidance from the Principal Investigator. This position compiles results and prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes. This role is familiar with a variety of field concepts, practices, and procedures, and can perform a variety of research tasks. This position typically reports to a project supervisor or project manager, and may provide guide to lower level staff.

The Senior Research Associate will be expected to work 10-15 hours each week and will supervised day-to-day by the PI (Dr. Emily Smith). The initial appointment is for six months, with opportunity for an extension after successful completion of the six months.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage advanced data analysis with guidance from the PI and in collaboration with other team members including those based at GWU and external international collaborators
  • Develop RShiny dashboard to oversee project and assist with:

  • Real-time reports
  • Data visualization tools
  • Real-time data entry and uploads
  • Participate in weekly or bi-weekly internal meetings and quarterly multi- site collaborator meetings.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree in a related discipline and 3 years of direct experience in the field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

    Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree, some doctoral-level coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics, 5 years of experience in data analysis (SAS, R, or Stata), and experience working with global partners to implement health research projects.
