Cambridge University Libraries wishes to appoint a Senior Library Assistant to support the Japanese and Korean Section, in particular the collection of Korean books and journals.
Most materials written in Korean or Japanese are acquired and made available to readers through this section, which is housed in the main University Library building. The Library collects academic and other publications in these languages to support research and teaching across the University.
The Senior Library Assistant joins a small team, currently consisting of the Head of Japanese and Korean Section and a part-time assistant with Japanese Specialism. This section sits within the larger department of World Collections.
A core part of the role is the cataloguing of new publications in Korean and their selection in collaboration with the Head of Section and academics in the field. As an essential part of a small team, the post holder will also catalogue books in other languages and carry out a variety of clerical tasks in support of the daily business of the section. Tasks may include labelling books, drafting response letters for donations, assisting with educational events, posting relevant news on social media, or updating content on the library website.
The post holder will be able to work unsupervised as needed and will have excellent communication and IT skills. Continuous attention to detail and a willingness to learn new skills are core attributes of a successful candidate. This role will suit someone who is enthusiastic about creating and working with structured, standardised, and sustainable information (data).
The post holder will be fully trained in cataloguing and in other required tasks through a combination of in-person guidance by a wider team of colleagues across the institution and self-guided training. The post holder may have occasional opportunities to participate in professional projects taking place across Cambridge University Libraries.
Hours may be worked flexibly to an agreed schedule within the hours of 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BAME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our institution.
