Your new role
Curtin University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal
Counsel to join our high performing Legal Services team. This 18-month
fixed-term position offers a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive legal
advice and services on a wide range of governance and administrative matters.
Our Legal Services team is instrumental in identifying and managing legal
risks, enabling the University to achieve its strategic goals.
This position will oversee legal governance, compliance and legislative
changes, and the development and maintenance of governance frameworks,
policies, by-laws, constitutions, and guidance notes. The role will also
support our Senior Leadership team by providing expert interpretative and
strategic governance legal advice, ensuring the University adheres to high
standards of legal and ethical practice.
Key duties and responsibilities:
Provide high level interpretive and strategic governance advice for the
University including to Council, the Vice-Chancellor, the Chief Legal
Officer and other executive managers.
Support the University to address and mitigate legal risk arising from
governance and regulatory matters and be actively involved in anticipating
and responding to areas of emerging need, including enabling the
University to achieve TEQSA compliance and meet HESF standards.
Interpret and advise on the University's statutory and legislative
compliance responsibilities.
In response to legislative changes, assist with drafting and negotiating
amendments to governing legislation, by-laws, governance frameworks,
policies and procedures, contract templates, committee constitutions, and
guidance notes.
Provide training, induction and continuous improvement development in
relation to governance to the University's secretariat function,
faculties, internal stakeholders, Council and Committees.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on complex and innovative
projects.
Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote legal awareness
across the University.
As required, provide legal advice on a range of legal queries spanning the
University's global operations, including those with strategic partners
and involving academic matters.
Liaise with and manage our relationships with external law firms.
You will bring to the role:
Relevant legal qualifications, with admission to practice in Western
Australia and hold an unrestricted practising certificate.
Extensive legal experience (6+ years of post-admission experience)
preferably in policy, compliance and drafting.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills with staff and clients at
all levels, including the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrated problem solving and research/analytical skills including the
ability to obtain and interpret information and make specific legal
recommendations.
Ability to work autonomously, harmoniously and co-operatively as part of a
team to provide quality client service.
Additional Information:
Must have current work rights in Australia matching the tenure of the
role.
Based in Perth, WA. Relocation and sponsorship support are not available.
