The Department of Linguistics and Philology is involved in research and education in a number of languages and language-related subjects and provides an international work environment. The department's activities cover many of the classical and modern languages and cultures in large areas of Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as computational and general linguistics. Education is offered at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

Duties The position involves teaching at the first- and second-cycle levels (on campus and remotely) in the discipline of Semitic languages, primarily Modern Standard Arabic, research and administration. Teaching in an Arabic dialect may also be required. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, examination and supervision of degree projects. Other duties that may be required include further development of courses and teaching methods and supervision of doctoral students. Duties also include monitoring developments in the field.

Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, the candidate must have a PhD in Semitic Languages or equivalent research expertise, demonstrated teaching expertise and the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

A prerequisite for considering that the applicant has teaching expertise is that the applicant has completed at least ten weeks of teacher training for higher education that is relevant to the organisation and its activities, or has equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the teacher training for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of employment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is a required qualification. If the successful applicant lacks the ability to teach in Swedish, they will be expected to acquire this ability within two years after employment begins.

The teaching expertise, research expertise and professional expertise must be relevant to the subject content and duties of the position. The applicant must also have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well. Flexibility, collaborative skills and responsibility are examples of such personal characteristics.

Assessment criteria Equal weight will be assigned to research expertise and teaching expertise in the selection of eligible applicants. Equally great care will be devoted to examination of teaching expertise and research expertise.

Research expertise Research expertise refers to having obtained research qualifications in Semitic languages with a concentration in Arabic. In assessing research expertise, research quality in this field will be the primary consideration. In addition, research in Arabic literature and Arabic mass media will be considered a particular merit. Value will also be assigned to research in other Semitic languages. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Teaching expertise In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the primary consideration. Teaching expertise should refer primarily to the first and second cycles and be thoroughly documented. Experience with course development and remote teaching will be considered merits. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise. Documented experience of teaching in Arabic mass media and Arabic literature will be considered particular merits. Value will also be assigned to experience of teaching in other Semitic languages.

Administrative expertise is significant to the position and will be assigned weight. Administrative expertise includes the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and appropriate manner, and the ability to specify and keep to time frames. Such expertise includes overall operational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities, and the ability to work in a structured manner based on awareness of goals and quality.

All qualifications must be documented to permit assessment of both quality and scope.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
