Senior lecturer in Semitic languages, specialising in Arabic

The Department of Linguistics and Philology is involved in research and
education in a number of languages and language-related subjects and provides
an international work environment. The department's activities cover many of
the classical and modern languages and cultures in large areas of Europe, Asia
and Africa, as well as computational and general linguistics. Education is
offered at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.
The position involves teaching at the first- and second-cycle levels (on
campus and remotely) in the discipline of Semitic languages, primarily Modern
Standard Arabic, research and administration. Teaching in an Arabic dialect
may also be required. Teaching includes course responsibility, course
administration, examination and supervision of degree projects. Other duties
that may be required include further development of courses and teaching
methods and supervision of doctoral students. Duties also include monitoring
developments in the field.
To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, the candidate must have
a PhD in Semitic Languages or equivalent research expertise, demonstrated
teaching expertise and the personal characteristics required to perform the
duties of the post well.
A prerequisite for considering that the applicant has teaching expertise is
that the applicant has completed at least ten weeks of teacher training for
higher education that is relevant to the organisation and its activities, or
has equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the teacher training
for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of

The teaching expertise, research expertise and professional expertise must be
relevant to the subject content and duties of the position. The applicant must
also have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the
post well. Flexibility, collaborative skills and responsibility are examples
of such personal characteristics.
Equal weight will be assigned to research expertise and teaching expertise
in the selection of eligible applicants. Equally great care will be devoted to
examination of teaching expertise and research expertise.
Research expertise refers to having obtained research qualifications in
Semitic languages with a concentration in Arabic. In assessing research
expertise, research quality in this field will be the primary consideration.
In addition, research in Arabic literature and Arabic mass media will be
considered a particular merit. Value will also be assigned to research in
other Semitic languages. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the
capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research, the ability to acquire
funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to
interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.
In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the primary
consideration. Teaching expertise should refer primarily to the first and
second cycles and be thoroughly documented. Experience with course development
and remote teaching will be considered merits. Furthermore, consideration must
be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as
well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact
with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of
teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching
expertise. Documented experience of teaching in Arabic mass media and Arabic
literature will be considered particular merits. Value will also be assigned
to experience of teaching in other Semitic languages.
Administrative expertise is significant to the position and will be assigned
weight. Administrative expertise includes the capacity to plan, organise and
prioritise work in an efficient and appropriate manner, and the ability to
specify and keep to time frames. Such expertise includes overall operational
planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational
priorities, and the ability to work in a structured manner based on awareness
of goals and quality.
