Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

This full time post is available from January 2023 on a permanent basis.

Summary of the role

The Centre for Geography and Environmental Science (CGES) on the Penryn Campus of the University of Exeter in Cornwall comprises ~20 Faculty staff ranging from environmental social scientists to physical environmental scientists, human and physical geographers. A small and friendly Centre, it sits within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Environment, Sustainability and Economy. The Department also includes Camborne School of Mines and the Centre for Environmental Mathematics. CGES delivers undergraduate programmes in Geography (BA/BSc), Environmental Science, Marine Science and has joint honours programmes with Geology and with Politics, and at postgraduate taught level MSc programmes in Sustainable Development and in Marine and Coastal Sustainability.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a new full-time permanent Senior Lecturer with particular interests in development, sustainability, and social and environmental change. Preference may be given to candidates who also have teaching or research expertise relating to marine social science.

The post will require strong potential for research leadership with evidence of high impact publications and a track record of attracting research funding. In addition, candidates are expected to have strong interdisciplinary research interests that provide an excellent fit for collaboration with colleagues in CGES and beyond, particularly in areas related to environmental social science and sustainable development. An ability and enthusiasm to contribute to the teaching of geographical research and methods across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is essential, including contributing to the MSc Sustainable Development and new MSc Marine and Coastal Sustainability. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead a new second year module on Development Geography and a final year module on their research specialism, as a minimum, and may also be asked to contribute to other modules where required.

About you

For a Senior Lecturer post you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in development geography, environmental social science or a related area and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding
  • An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
  • Strong connections and funded projects with business and community partners
  • Involvement in projects which develop impact
  • A strong potential for research leadership
  • A track record in refereed publications and success in significant grant capture
  • Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges
