  • Role Description Department

The Department of Biology at the University of York is looking to appoint a new Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the area of Microbiology / Biochemistry. You should have a track record of success in one or both of these areas, through research and as an educator.

The successful candidate will support the development of our broad-ranging research portfolio, which is characterised by strengths in challenge-led life sciences research and its translation into industrial, clinical, societal, and environmental impact. We are looking for an outstanding academic whose interests complement and deepen existing strength and expertise across the department and University. We are looking for candidates who will add value to our research portfolio and align with our existing strengths in, for example, health & disease (via YBRI), in plant and microbial biotechnology (through CNAP), or through the Chemistry-led structural biology laboratory (YSBL).

The Department of Biology runs highly successful taught undergraduate and Masters degree programmes in Biology and specialist areas including Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. We expect the successful candidate will provide leadership, ideas and new disciplinary strengths to influence the development of our taught portfolio. The department has a diverse graduate student body with PhD programmes funded by BBSRC, MRC, and NERC and we expect the successful candidate to successfully maintain a research group of graduate students, technical and post-doctoral staff.

The position will be based in the Department of Biology with access to our world-class Bioscience Technology Facility containing state-of-the-art technologies and support for imaging, cytometry, -omics, and biomolecular analysis. The University of York is proud to be a top 10 UK University for Research according to REF2021. Biological sciences research at York has been consistently ranked in the UK top 10 since 2008, including in REF2021.

    Role

You will work in a collegial way and be open to the excellent opportunities for citizenship and interdisciplinary working at York. You will develop creative and sustainable independent research programmes, supported by external funding resulting in internationally-leading outputs. You will actively participate in research supervision, management and administration contributing to successful research outputs. You will also actively participate in our taught programmes by designing, developing, managing and delivering teaching in bioscience areas relevant to your experience and interests.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience, a successful post-doctoral and academic career with an excellent publication record in a relevant area and evidence of the ability to drive an internationally competitive research programme. Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching and learning, demonstrated through evidence of excellent educational practice.

This post is available full time (part-time working will be considered) on an open contract with starting salary in range £53,353 to £61,823 pa. Your application should include a cover letter outlining how your recruitment would fit with, and enhance, our existing strengths in research and teaching.
