The Department of Culture and Aesthetics is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. The department has about 150 employees, researchers, teachers, PhD candidates as well as technical and administrative staff. The Department of Culture and Aesthetics conducts research and teaching within seven main areas: History of Ideas, Art History, Literature Studies, Musicology, Theatre and Performance Studies, Curating and Heritage Studies. The department has about 1000 students distributed in those different areas and is engaged in collaborations across the disciplinary boundaries through workshops, thematic series, seminars for research applications and research presentations by employees as well as invited national and international researchers.

The area Art History employs about 20 teachers and researchers as well as about 10 PhD candidates, and provides research and education from early modern to contemporary periods, which includes a wide range of topics from classical art history to design, architecture and visual studies. Representatives for the area are successful in achieving external research grants and participate actively in national as well as international research networks and collaborations. Art History offers a wide repertoire of courses on basic and advanced level with the possibility for a master exam through two international master programmes in art history, one of these specified towards technical art history and art museums. Apart from that, teaching is done in collaboration with Heritage studies, Curating and other departments at Stockholm University as well as with museums and other cultural institutions in the Stockholm area.

Subject/subject description Art History traditionally implies the study of art history, aesthetic objects and visual expressions in a historical and stylistic context as well as perspectives on art from social and philosophical perspectives. Today the discipline includes art, architecture, design and visual culture in a wider perspective, as well as critical perspectives on culture. Art History is in a dynamic relationship with a definition of art and visual culture in continuous development.

Main responsibilities Responsibilities mainly include teaching, course development, supervision and examination at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as research on high national and international level with a special focus on early modern and modern periods, from antiquity to c. 1800. Accepted teaching languages are Swedish, other Scandinavian languages or English. A senior lecturer is expected to participate in the department's internal work, which also includes administrative responsibilities. A senior lecturer is also expected to actively apply for external research grants as well as create active contacts to the national and international research community. The employment includes time for competence development and research according to the current terms and conditions agreement.

Qualification requirements Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer should hold a PhD in art history or have equivalent research skills. The applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical expertise as well as potential to teach in Swedish, other Scandinavian languages or English. Teaching proficiency should normally have been demonstrated through teaching experience at both undergraduate- and master's level. Teaching proficiency should be well documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.

The applicant should have well documented capacity to collaborate as well as general capacity to execute all the required tasks well.

Assessment criteria Special and equal emphasis will be placed on teaching and research skills. Scientific expertise is evaluated through the quality of the applicant's scientific publications with regard to range and capacity for innovative research within specifically periods covering Antiquity to c. 1800, range in publications (national and international) as well as active participation in national and international conferences and networks. International publications from the past ten years will be taken into special consideration. Pedagogical expertise is evaluated with regards to experience and documented strong potential to teach, examine and supervise on all levels with a special focus on the above mentioned periods. Particular emphasis will be placed to pedagogical self-reflexivity and demonstrated capacity to develop new courses and act as course coordinator.

Strong emphasis will be placed on a documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and fellow researchers.

Strong emphasis will be placed on documented collaboration with the surrounding society and information on research and developmental work.

Strong emphasis will be placed on having successfully planned, applied for and obtained research project funds from external research funding bodies.

Emphasis will also be placed on administrative skills

Teaching and learning in higher education It is a merit to have completed at least 15 credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. An applicant who does not have at least 15 credits in teaching and learning in higher education must conduct such an education during the first two years of employment. Applicants who proclaim to have acquired equivalent knowledge without a formal education have to explain how these competences have been acquired and why they are compatible to the competence given by formal education.

Additional information Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
