All Graduate Teaching Assistants are University of Warwick students, mostly postgraduates, employed on a fixed-term basis to support academic staff at the University by performing teaching or teaching related duties in line with academic needs and student requirements. GTA positions provide a development opportunity for postgraduate students to enhance their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in future and to achieve professional recognition.

GTAs will be employed at the University for a period of 2 years or until they graduate and will be allocated a minimum of 20 hours of work in any one term per any one academic year through the duration of their contract.

Postgraduate students must ensure that they receive permission from their PhD supervisor prior to accepting a GTA position, as well as understand their visa and funding limitations.

The Department of Psychology is currently recruiting for a number of Graduate Assistant Posts to assist in the teaching of modules at all levels. Psychology has a growing and diverse student population and was ranked 1st amongst Russell Group Universities in the National Student Survey (NSS) for staff being good at explaining things, providing timely feedback and running well organised courses, by our final year Psychology students. The Department currently holds a Bronze TEF Award and are working towards the Silver benchmark. We are looking for new postgraduates who are want experience to enhance their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in the future. Your contract would offer you a minimum of 20 hours/term for a period of 2 years or until you graduate.

Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is an Associate Tutor post which covers support for the module across the academic year. Successful applicants will be expected to take an introductory lecture session followed by ongoing support for the module convenor managing communication between internship organisations, students and academic supervisors, collating data to match organisations and students, organising academic supervisors for students, managing admin associated with placements (e.g., travel expenses, computer/laptop needs), organising the mini- conference to be held in August 2023. The post holder will be required to have good organisational, project management and communication skills

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder's role is to aid the module convenor to deliver a high quality experience to students. The post holders will need to become familiar with module content and to deliver an introductory lecture session followed by ongoing support for the module convenor managing communication between internship organisations, students and academic supervisors, collating data to match organisations and students, organising academic supervisors for students, managing admin associated with placements (e.g., travel expenses, computer/laptop needs), organising the mini-conference to be held in August 2023. Whilst full details of duties and responsibilities will be provided by the module convenor to the successful applicant, this post will involve 4 hours of contact with students, and it is expected that around 5 hours of preparation will be needed including familiarisation with the module content and learning outcomes, and meeting with the module to convener to discuss materials. The organisational support for the module, including the liaison with placements is expected to take around 2 hours per week to a total of around 40 hours across the academic year. Workload will be mostly across term 1 (setting up internships) and term 2/3 (organising conference).

All GTA post holders are expected to undertake core training expected of all staff (Those who have previously undertaken this training are only expected to undertake a refresher where necessary hours to undertake this) All post holders are expected to have completed the Preparing to Teach in Higher Education course in advance of teaching.

Person Specification

The Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. This is measured by (a) Application Form, (b) Test/Exercise, (c) Interview, (d) Presentation.

Essential Criteria 1

A relevant undergraduate (2:1 or 1st) or Master's (merit or distinction) qualification in Psychology or a related subject or overseas equivalent (a)

Currently registered for postgraduate study in Psychology, or in a related subject at the University of Warwick (a)

Essential Criteria 3

Ability to support the learning of groups of students on modules in Psychology (c)

Essential Criteria 4

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written); good command of written and spoken English (a)

Permission from supervisor before accepting a GTA position (a)

Competence in teaching and providing feedback to students at an appropriate level (c)
