Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

Under general direction and with limited guidance from the Director of Financial Reporting, the Senior Financial Reporting Accountant is responsible for applying principles of accounting to perform a wide range of accounting functions. Such functions include timely general ledger maintenance, compliance with internal controls, and review of transactions in overall support of University-wide financial reporting.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for performing a variety of advanced accounting functions ensuring timeliness and accuracy of data in accordance and in compliance with established procedures and with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prepares weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual financial general ledger reconciliations and variance analysis to ensure data integrity.
  • Analyzes data discrepancies and researches applicable corrections and adjustments to recommend solutions to management.
  • Primary accountant responsible to lead testing for new system integrations with Banner Finance and/or other external platforms used by University. Must identify, communicate, and help to resolve any discrepancies or issues prior to implementation.
  • Lead accountant for internal units and external constituencies (i.e. Payroll, Student Accounts, AP, Banks , etc.) to contact for discrepancies and issues that arise related to the recording of financial transactions.
  • Assist University Financial Reporting Analyst with audit related requests.
  • Assists the Director, Financial Reporting, with the development and implementation of documentation guides, job aids and checklists for resource material for training to University staff on all campuses on matters of fiscal responsibility.
  • Works closely with other Financial Reporting employees in testing system upgrades, improving workflow and accounting processes, as well as troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions.
  • Reviews routine and advanced accounting transactions, such as journal entries, daily banking transactions and cash deposits, to ensure timely processing and compliance with regulations and policies as required by law and University policies.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and reviews general ledger account reconciliations that support financial reporting and tax filings to ensure accuracy and adherence to proper accounting standards.
  • Maintains system of internal controls over all University-wide financial transactions.
  • Researches accounting-related policy, tax and other compliance issues, as requested.
  • Assists Director in developing and maintaining up-to-date policies and procedures for Financial Reporting.
  • Leads and participates in unit trainings to provide instruction and guidance on financial reporting matters.
  • Identifies needs, evaluates options and makes recommendations on process improvements and the implementation of new technology.
  • Provides oversight for compliance with University document management policies and related department level procedures, federal, state, and financial standards regulations.
  • Establishes processes and oversees the ongoing maintenance of and reporting for the Signature Database. Builds solid and professional working relationships with various internal users of the database, as well as external consultants, and ensuring users' computers are compatible with the database and that data is current, accurate, and accordance with University policy.
  • Serves as a back-up and assists the Financial Reporting Analysts with tasks, as needed.
  • Provides training for student workers and other department new hires on tasks such as usage of the Banner system, department reporting cycle, daily banking tasks, and reconciliations.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned or requested.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (Two (2) years of full time experience in the same/similar position is equal to one (1) year of completed post high school education coursework).
  • Seven (7) years of accounting experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Knowledge of audit practices and procedures and accounting tax reporting and compliance.
  • Knowledge of Federal and California state compliance and tax law.
  • Accounting experience in higher education or non-profit accounting.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills required, comfortable with public speaking.
  • Strong computer skills, including intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills, and substantial experience with automated general ledger processing systems.
  • Ability to work independently with critical deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Solid working knowledge of audit practices and procedures and accounting tax reporting and compliance.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

    Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer, phone and office equipment. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, walking across campus, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

    Work Environment/Work Week/Travel: Work performed in standard office environment. Duties performed during standard business hours, additional time may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional travel to other campuses and required meetings/trainings.
