Applicants are invited to apply for a 12-month fixed term post of Senior Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).

We are a Major Trauma Centre serving the South as well as a University Hospital tertiary referral centre for elective orthopaedics. We are looking for highly motivated registrar grade equivalent surgeons who wish to further their trauma and orthopaedic experience. You will also be part of the on-call rota. The department currently consists of 30 consultants and associate specialist orthopaedic surgeons covering the range of orthopaedic subspecialties.

The experience and teaching offered by the department has allowed our past fellows to successfully pass the FRCS Orth exam, to be appointed on deanery rotations and obtain consultant posts.

Main duties of the job
  • Regular Orthopaedic outpatient clinics at UHS Hospitals (1-2 days per week). This will cover both Elective and Trauma.
  • Trauma operating sessions at UHS Hospitals (1-2 days per week).
  • Additional Elective operating sessions at UHS Hospitals will be available.
  • On-call duties as part of the Senior on call rota (usually Friday on-call days and weekend Nights. Details can be provided if necessary)
  • Supervising the treatment of patients in University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
  • Carrying out regular ward rounds as appropriate (1-2 per week).
  • Admin and SPA time will be available
  • Participation in clinical audit within the unit.
  • Active involvement in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff on ward rounds, in theatre and in clinics, including the teaching of medical and nursing students
  • Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices

    WHAT YOU'LL DO

    The post is intended for a Surgeon who is developing a specialist interest in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery with additional option to be involved in Elective surgery. There will be the opportunity to operate on elective and traumatic conditions both supervised and when suitable, alone. Audit and research are an expected part of this role.

    WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

    Applicants should have at least 4 years previous experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at ST3 level and be post MRCS or equivalent

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

    Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

    Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

    Basic Salary - MT04 £51,017

    Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
