The Curtin for Agribusiness Profitability Initiative within the Centre for Crop and Disease Management at Curtin University is a research group that brings together university expertise in data science, geographical information systems, farming systems, agribusiness, as well as well as spatial modelling and machine learning. We have strong industry partnerships and focus on research to overcome key challenges for broadacre agricultural and horticulture through data visualisation, development of decision support for farmers, agronomists, and industry professionals. Our goal is to use data and advanced analytics to underpin sustainable agricultural production by improving return on investment and management of risks associated with farming.

We are seeking a detailed orientated Senior Data Scientist to join our multi- disciplinary team, developing capability in spatial data science within the agricultural industry on a new and exciting project, “Digital Edge”.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide data analytics solutions, using a range of highly developed skills from mathematical, computer science and statistical disciplines, within the Centre for Crop Disease Management to enhance research outcomes and/or support business decision making.
  • Lead and manage data analytics activities for assigned projects, ensuring all relevant stakeholder requirements are met.
  • Work with the research group/business area to understand and identify where data analytics can add value.
  • Prepare required data sets for sophisticated statistical analysis, model generation and derivation of actionable insights.
  • Identify and use suitable technologies, tools and algorithms which can be applied to research/business activities.
  • Provide technical leadership, working with research group/business area to employ analysis techniques and tools that can be utilized by the researchers themselves.
  • Build credible statistical models from the data and use best coding practices to generate reproducible work.
  • Explore and visualise the data to present the ‘story' of the data in a meaningful way, and to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Assist researchers or business areas to employ data management best practice.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of developments in computer hardware, software systems and algorithms where they apply to data science.
  • You will possess a high level of expertise in data science backed by a postgraduate qualification in data science or a related discipline. You may possess deep expertise in data science specialism or play a lead role in engaging with data owners and other relevant stakeholders.

    With a responsibility to manage the work of casual staff, it would be desirable to have experience working with HDR students. Line management experience is not essential.

    You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role. Only in limited situations will visa sponsorship situations be considered.
