GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR ( F acility for A ntiproton and I on R esearch) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

The Experiment Electronics department supports science experiments and projects at GSI/FAIR in all electronics-related tasks. Our strength is detector readout, data acquisition, data analysis, and the monitoring and control of single detectors, and complex large scale detector systems. We support scientists in planning, implementation, and application of novel technologies, including those that go beyond state-of-the-art systems.

Over the past several decades, the department developed a scalable, high- performance, highprecision data acquisition system (Multi Branch System – MBS) that has been continuously improved and is currently being utilized in various applications throughout GSI and beyond. The system is composed of a variety of functional modules such as ultra-fast signal converters, picosecond-precision time-to-digital converters, trigger systems, high efficient data acquisition electronics and a large set of corresponding readout and data analysis tools.

To keep pace with the ever-increasing demands in experimental requirements, we are

offering a tenure track position:

(Senior) - Data Acquisition Scientist R &D

(all genders)

as soon as possible, who will take care of future improvements and new developments of our data acquisition systems for the FAIR facility, and who will maintain the existing systems.

You can expect to work in a team of about 30 highly skilled and qualified people and will receive a comprehensive induction and internal training.

We offer exceptional expertise in analog and digital electronics as well as a layout team that converts even the most complex circuitry into impressive PCB layouts. Our internal production chain includes a professional pick-and-place machine that allows us to fabricate for medium size projects and offers – together with many other professional tools – a bench for rapid prototyping that allows fast development cycles.

Your tasks:

  • Research and development of novel hard- and software concepts and solutions for various data acquisition task
  • Assist experiments in the design of their systems, joint development or specifications
  • Participation in the system design, supervision of our specialist groups
  • Research and development of novel concepts, prototyping and debugging until production readiness, development of the required test environments
  • Supervision of production and quality assurance
  • Development of firmware, gateware, data acquisition and data analysis software
  • Installation and commissioning in cooperation with the experiments
  • Maintenance and repair of existing and new systems
  • Support of scientists before, during and after the experiment
  • Assumption of responsibility for purchasing and internal resale, management of financial resources.
  • Your profile:

  • You have a PhD in physics, electronics, information technology or equivalent experience with complex data acquisition hard- and/or software
  • Experience with the development and/or application of time-to-digital conversion with nano- or picosecond time-precision, ideally in particle-, astroparticle or nuclear physics experiments
  • Experience with the development of circuit diagrams and their conversion to PCB layouts
  • Experience in the programming of microcontrollers and data acquisition/analysis systems in high-level languages (e.g. C++, Python)
  • Experience in the implementation of complex digital designs in modern FPGAs
  • Relevant knowledge in the setup and installation of embedded operating systems
  • Knowledge in their programming (e.g. development of kernel drivers)
  • Experience in the realization of large scale hard- and/or software projects
  • Experience with the administrative and financial aspects of large scale projects
  • Experience with the commissioning and operation of physics experiments
  • A sense for the relevant specifications in complex system.
  • You are service oriented and enjoy working cooperatively on projects
  • Good communication skill, ability to work in a team and interlectual competence
  • You have the ambition to build the best data acquisition in the world, but you are also satisfied when it merely serves its purpose
