General Information

The Senior Assistant Director for Transfer is responsible for planning and implementing transfer recruitment strategy to meet university enrollment goals. The Senior Assistant Director for Transfer provides strategic leadership by overseeing the transfer application, application review, recruitment strategies, marketing, communication management, and collaborates with on-campus partners that support transfer students. Serves as a member of the leadership team for the Application Review and Recruitment unit within admissions. Assists with the hiring and training of new admissions counselors. Travel in a Virginia region is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as the lead for transfer admission and recruitment at JMU.

  • Responsible for the transfer admission evaluation and oversees transfer admission committee.
  • Serves as primary reader of transfer applicants for spring, summer and fall entry.
  • Responsible for training admissions application readers on the transfer admissions evaluation process.
  • Responsible for planning transfer onsite admissions events; including working with partners at VCCS schools, scheduling events, updating the forms and materials used for events.
  • Coordinates and conducts transfer admissions sessions.
  • Works with prospective transfer students to provide advising and recommendations to help navigate the admissions process and to be competitive. Often includes providing a plan to prospective transfer students on building an appropriate schedule or advice on retaking courses to be more competitive.
  • Responsible for overseeing transfer recruitment travel in Virginia.
  • Helps to plan and implement transfer goals to help to ensure JMU is transparent and transfer-friendly.
  • Serves on ongoing committees or projects that involve other areas of campus such as:

  • TransferVA portal
  • Serves as Region Manager and Supports Application Decisions

  • Serves as the region manager for the Shenandoah Valley consisting of application review, and consistent and cohesive admissions decisions.
  • Evaluates all freshman applications in that recruitment region. This requires the ability to analyze transcripts to understand the nuances of different schools' offerings and grading scales; follow-up with school counselors regarding situations to advocate for applicants; strong attention to detail to ensure accurate, consistent decisions are made using professional
  • Serves as an active member of other admissions application committees.
  • Answers emails, phone calls, decision inquiry forms, JMYou inquiries, and in-person questions from prospective families for the recruitment region in a timely fashion. Advises students on potential majors that align with career path (involving an understanding of all JMU programs), course decisions for competitive first-year and transfer applicants, helps navigate prospective families through the application processes, and responds and develops pathways for applicants that are not initially offered admission to JMU. Requires an ability to listen, understand, and validate conversations with families to provide counseling and advising.
  • Utilize office-wide technology for prospective students and applicants. Includes using PeopleSoft and OnBase to analyze application information and recording notes in PeopleSoft to share with admissions committees, maintaining accurate data.
  • Qualifications

    Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Plan, organize and implement new transfer recruitment strategies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; and attention to detail.
  • Strong presentation skills,
  • Customer service skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Some evening and weekend work
  • Applicants must hold a valid driver's license.
  • These positions also require the successful candidates to be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Preferred :

  • 3-5 years of admissions experience

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on- campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
