The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has as its mission the accumulation, generation, and dissemination of knowledge in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Central to the mission is a high quality research and educational program that benefits our students, the State of North Carolina, the nation and the world. The Department acts as a focal point for development, growth and entrepreneurship. The national and international reputation of the Department facilitates future growth in areas of fundamental economic importance to the State.

The department is also home to the NC State Nanofabrication Facility ( NNF), which is a 7400 ft. 2 Class 100 cleanroom that provides semiconductor-processing capabilities to a variety of science and engineering disciplines. The facility possesses a full range of micro- and nano- fabrication capabilities including photo and electron beam lithography, wet and dry etch, chemical vapor deposition (including atomic layer deposition), vacuum metallization, rapid thermal anneal, and various characterization tools. The NNF is a core nanotechnology user facility in the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN), a site in the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI).

Essential Job Duties

The NNF seeks a talented and industrious engineer to join our team as a Semiconductor Research Engineer. The individual in this position will be expected to help maintain all NNF fabrication equipment and processes, to ensure that they are performing at a high level. They will also be expected to contribute to safe and efficient facility operation as a whole.

The primary responsibilities of the engineer will be as follows:

  • Work in a cleanroom environment
  • Develop standard processes using semiconductor fabrication equipment, such as lithography tools, dry etchers, and metal deposition tools.
  • Ensure that the standard processes meet the required specifications.
  • Train users on different tools so they can run the tools on their own in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Interface with remote users and assist in process development.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance on tools to ensure they operate without interruptions.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication tools to quickly identify problems.
  • Work with the NNF hardware engineer/technicians or external vendors to carry out minor repairs on tools.
  • Arrange service visits for major repairs.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor processing and device fabrication in a university, industry, or government-owned clean-room. This experience may be an M.S. thesis project on a relevant topic in a semiconductor fab setting
  • Experience in Cleanroom operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines- Must be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions
  • Experience in clean-room safety operations
  • Must be comfortable working with semiconductor fabrication equipment such as metrology equipment, and plasma etch tools
  • Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and customers.
  • Must be able to operate tools in the facility and train users to use the equipment independently.
  • Must be comfortable working with semiconductor fabrication equipment, lithography tools, dry etchers, and metal deposition tools
  • Must be comfortable working with students
  • Must be comfortable working safely with chemicals
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a science and engineering discipline
  • Five or more years of experience working with semiconductor fabrication in a university, government, or industry cleanroom
