BRIDGES Research Project is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research project building a “fully virtualized”, high performance experimental networking facility to span the Atlantic Ocean connecting research sites in the United States and Europe. The facility will be based on a 100 Gbps trans- Atlantic telecommunications infrastructure. An advanced virtualization architecture will act as the user facing services to present a set of virtual resources to global science applications and distributed services.

This posting is for a self-help research assistant (9 months, 20 hours/week, $12/hour), supervised by Dr. Popoviciu. The research assistant will support the activities of the project by participating in networking equipment configuration and staging, help deploy, integrate and manage testing and operational tools. This project provides the participating students exposure to advanced networking and cloud technologies, international collaborators, IT management research and advanced analytics. This work combines some tasks that must be completed on campus and most that can be completed remotely.

Support of research activities includes, but is not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Deployment, integration and operation of network management tools
  • Work with Linux based platforms
  • Test and benchmark hardware and software
  • Work with other undergraduate and/or graduate students on research project related tasks
  • Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)

    Research assistants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be familiar with Linux
  • Have knowledge of IT networking concepts
  • Familiarity with Python programming language, JSON, XML, SQL, Docker, Git, shell scripting and OpenStack are a plus
  • Work within a team of undergraduate and graduate students, software developers and researcher.
