The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.

Essential Job Duties

Scientists at BTEC provide support for lab activities associated with NCSU undergraduate/graduate courses and lab activities associated with BTEC's Professional Development Short Course Program. In addition, laboratory managers support projects that are part of BTEC's Bioprocess and Analytical Services Program. The Scientist position also has responsibility for coordinating activities across multiple labs in a given area (e.g., small-, intermediate-, large-scale areas).

Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Execute and manage projects under BTEC's research program including, but not limited to, grant application and reporting, coordination with collaborators (i.e. faculty and project manager(s)), characterization of samples, technology transfer, process development and scale up, and basic research.
  • Execute processes under BTEC's bioprocess services program including upstream and downstream manufacturing of bioproducts, upstream and downstream bioprocess design, scale up, research and development.
  • Provide support to projects under BTEC's bioprocess services program; this may include, but it is not limited to, creating production schedules, writing documentation, overseeing raw materials and sample inventory, and communicating effectively with clients.
  • Support active instruction of North Carolina State University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as industry professionals in subject matters related to biomanufacturing. Specific topics include but are not limited to cell culture, recovery and purification operations for biomolecules, cGMP bioprocessing, development of biopharmaceutical processes, and analytical test development and execution.
  • Provide input on course and process improvements.
  • Oversee BTEC's service center(s).
  • Identify equipment-related issues, identify root cause, and make minor repairs/adjustments.
  • Ensure safety in the laboratories.
  • Support collaborations within BTEC's BMIG.
  • Follow documented procedures and policies within the BTEC facility and at the University.
  • Other Responsibilities

    Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • A minimum of a B.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) plus four years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience in downstream and/or upstream bioprocessing with emphasis in process development. Particularly, experience with mammalian cell culture, bacterial fermentation, or similar expression system, also experience in tangential flow filtration, preparative chromatography (GE Explorer and/or Avant systems), normal flow filtration, centrifugation and homogenization.
  • Required degree must be completed prior to start date.

    Required Education/Experience for level of Scientist Position:

  • For Scientist III – MS and 3 years minimum experience or BS and 8 years experience
  • For Scientist II – MS and 18 months experience or BS and 6 years experience
  • For Scientist I – MS or BS and 4 years experience
  • Other Required Qualifications

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Ability to conduct multiple projects at the same time in and organized manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different groups within BTEC, clients, interdisciplinary groups, and students from the University and from industry.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing projects, priorities, clients and schedules.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
  • Proficiency with Google suite, MS Office suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline).
  • Hands-on experience with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
  • Hands-on experience in upstream bioprocessing, with emphasis in process development. Particularly, experience with mammalian cell culture and disposable bioreactor technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory affairs and its impact to process development.
  • Experience in product characterization.
  • Experience in grant application and management.
  • Project management experience that led to successful completion of a project.
  • Preference is to hire at Scientist III level; the level of Scientist III requires an MS and 3 years minimum experience or BS and 8 years experience If no candidates meet this requirement, others that meet the requirements for Scientist I or II will also be considered.
