Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

In line with Empa's mission, the Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.

Within TSL, the Critical Materials and Resource Efficiency Group (CARE) is looking for a

Scientist in the fields of lithium-ion battery recycling and circular economy (CircuBAT)

who will be responsible for developing and applying experimental and analytical methods in the frame of the applied interdisciplinary project "Swiss circular economy model for lithium-ion batteries" (CircuBAT), assess the sustainability of material cycles by performing material flow analyses and life cycle assessments, and identify recycling potentials and optimal end-of- life options.

CircuBAT is an Innosuisse Flagship project, which involves 11 research and 24 industry partners and aims to close the loop between production, application and recycling of lithium-ion batteries for vehicles.

Your tasks include

  • Develop and apply methods to recover and characterize electrode materials and electrolytes from lithium-ion batteries, including techniques such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis
  • Assess the sustainability of material cycles by performing (dynamic) material flow analyses and life cycle assessments
  • Identify recycling potentials and optimal end-of-life options
  • Your profile

  • MSc or PhD inchemistry, material science, environmental engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience in material flow assessment methods and/or life-cycle assessment
  • Experience in scientific writing and publishing
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English, preferably fluent in German
  • We offer a highly interdisciplinary research environment and flexible working conditions to perform relevant research for science and industry. Our young team consists of experienced scientists, postdocs as well as PhD and master's students. For more details, visit www. empa.ch/care.
