Description

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, design and conduct research and present findings.
  • Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Characterize different B cell subsets isolated from healthy individual or patients diagnosed with autoimmune diseases like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
  • Develop in vitro culture systems to generate human B cells effectors and determine the molecular signals that are required for their development and functional properties.
  • Identify the molecular and environmental signals required for the development of a pathogenic population of T-bet expressing B cells that are expanded in a subset of SLE patients.
  • Design, perform and analyze studies that establish the signals that promote these pathogenic human B cells rapidly differentiate into autoantibody producing plasma cells.
  • Identify and characterize virus-specific B cells in humans who were immunized with the seasonal influenza virus vaccine.
  • Determine the functional properties of vaccine-specific memory B cells.
  • Responsible for the design, performance and analysis of experiments testing whether vaccine-specific memory B cells expressing the transcription factor T-bet differentiate more rapidly into antibody secreting plasma cells following exposure to cytokine and viral-derived stimuli.
  • Identify novel factors that promote long-lived plasma cell or memory B cell program.
  • Responsible for analyzing all the data, writing abstracts and progress reports for the NIH, presenting the data at UAB and at outside meetings, and writing the manuscripts that summarized the findings.
  • Direct supervision of two graduate students, oversight of all data analysis and budget management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
