Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Scientific assistant in aquatic ecology (80-100%)

The appointment is linked to the research program “Climate change and freshwater biodiversity”, which is jointly supported by Eawag and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The specific project supported by this position will use experimental approaches to investigate the joint effects of increasing temperatures and other stressors (e.g. chemical pollution) on freshwater food webs. These experiments will mostly take place outdoors in large experimental units (mesocosms) that mimic natural pond or stream habitats.

Your profile

Applicants must hold a BSc or MSc degree in biology, environmental sciences or a related field. They should have a strong interest in aquatic ecology, biodiversity, and ecotoxicology. Good knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and their organisms is desirable, and additional laboratory skills either in molecular genetics or chemistry would be an asset. We expect the necessary flexibility to participate in physical work outdoors as well as in diligent laboratory or desk work. To work productively in our international research group, the ability to communicate and write in English and in German is important. Applicants should also have a valid driver's license.

The position will be linked to the Department of Aquatic Ecology at Eawag in Dübendorf, but experts from additional research departments including Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Systems Analysis and Modelling as well as the Ecotox Centre will participate in the project. Eawag offers a stimulating and collaborative scientific environment with excellent links to practice.The position is offered for a maximal duration of 3-4 years with a flexible starting date (albeit no later than February 2024).
