Position Summary

The University at Buffalo Libraries seek an exceptional and highly motivated Scholarly Publishing Librarian (Senior Assistant Librarian) to assist scholars with increasing the visibility and impact of their research and education agendas. We are looking for early career professionals who can work closely with other team members to direct initiatives that will transform the Libraries into a hub of scholarly communication and who are committed to the fundamental role libraries play in the scholarly, civic and creative lives of scholars. The successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with departmental liaisons to identify and develop services to meet the evolving publishing needs of University researchers and scholars;
  • Advocate for innovative and experimental models of scholarly publishing, and collaborate with departmental liaisons, information technologists, and the Digital Scholarship Studio and Network to develop tools and services to facilitate sustainable scholarly production;
  • Investigate collaborative library publishing opportunities with University and external partners;
  • Explore open access publishing platforms for University-created electronic journals, conference proceedings, capstone projects, literary magazines, scientific datasets, and other born-digital materials;
  • Cultivate strategic alliances with University and external partners to advance open research and scholarship and to build capacity in the open research environment;
  • Consult with copyright and intellectual property experts to assist University scholars with alternative publishing options and with understanding of publishing agreements and author's rights;
  • Participate in state-wide and nationwide programs and communication efforts to promote innovative and sustainable models of scholarly publishing;
  • Explore and develop alternative and sustainable funding models in support of open education, and provides open and affordable course content advocacy, outreach, and education across the disciplines;
  • Coordinate with the University's Open Education Research Lab and SUNY OER Services to document open and affordable course content use on campus, calculate student savings, communicate benefits and impact to the broader university community, and facilitate research in the field of open education;
  • Work with faculty and instructors, and with institutional repository administrators to facilitate preservation and ongoing access to University-created open educational content.
  • This is a full-time, tenure track appointment requiring research, scholarship, and contributions to the profession in addition to core job duties. The Scholarly Publishing Librarian reports to the Head of Scholarly Communication and works with a dynamic cohort of professionals who provide leadership and coordination for the Libraries' Scholarly Communication activities.     Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program; degree requirement must be met at the time of application; Demonstrated awareness of the challenges and opportunities for justice, diversity, inclusion, equity and access in staffing, services, collections, and physical spaces within the Libraries, the university, and in higher education;
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity in organizations;
  • Demonstrated experience with issues related to open educational resources, copyright, and open access publishing;
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts, such as open education, open access publishing, and copyright to students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating and developing collegial relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff;
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, and strong service ethic.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience providing OER or open access guidance;
  • Experience preparing and delivering workshops and presentations focused on OER, open access publishing, and/or copyright-related topics;
  • Experience with publishing tools, repository platforms, and software;
  • Project management experience;
  • Grant writing experience.
