Organizational Overview

The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide and will be a key contributing partner to the EIC. The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.

Position Description

The Magnet Division seeks an individual to serve as Cognizant Space & Work Process Engineer. This individual will report to the Division Director & will be assigned roles essential to the safe and compliant operation of the division's physical spaces and execution of work activities. Those roles are:

  • Work Control Manager
  • Experimental Review Coordinator
  • Space Manager
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with scientists, engineers, subject matter experts, managers, technicians, and other staff to develop & maintain compliant systems and work plans required to safely accomplish division goals.
  • Work with contractors and vendors, delivering and working in division space.
  • Be responsible for implementation & maintenance of the division's Work Control & Experimental Review system /process in accordance with lab requirements.
  • Collaborate with a staff of work control coordinators who, while not direct reports, are division personnel who maintain an additional role in managing day to day work control & experimental control activities.
  • As a Cognizant Space Manager, provide oversight of activities and operations of the division's people, resources, and facilities. The goal is to enable safe working conditions and act as steward of the lab work- space.
  • Work with building occupants and the lab's Facility & Operations personnel to assure building & space issues are addressed in a proper manner.
  • Position Requirements

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience is required. Maintains a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized engineering field.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Mechanical or Electrical Technology Related field.
  • Experience with Hazard Identification and Analysis in a facility with:
  • Mechanical & Electrical Fabrication & Assembly
  • Machining
  • Application of requirements, standards, and regulations into work planning
  • Familiar with pre-job briefings and activity walk-down concepts
  • Experience with preparing documentation for scientific, technical & safety operations
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a diverse team environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical or closely related engineering field)
  • Experience with Hazard Identification and Analysis in a facility with:
  • Lifting & Rigging
  • Chemical Use
  • Previous BNL (or DOE Complex) experience as a Work Control Coordinator or Manager
  • Hazard Identification and Analysis involving Cryogenics /Pressurized Systems
