The Writing Program at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is pleased
to invite applications for the position of teaching instructor in the Rutgers
English Language Institute (RELI). RELI is a global community that supports
undergraduate and graduate scholars who use English as an additional language.
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching position, with a start date of
September 1, 2021. The initial contract is for a period of one year with the
possibility for reappointment. Starting salary for the 2021-2022 academic year
is commensurate with experience plus health and retirement benefits, and
eligibility for conference travel grants. Teaching instructors teach 21
credits per academic year, typically distributed as a 4/3 course load, with no
more than 22 students per class. Faculty benefit from regular meetings with
Writing Program directors, as well as pedagogy workshops and other
professional development opportunities.

Minimum Education and Experience
• Prior experience teaching university composition and English for Academic
• Experience and interest in teaching linguistically and culturally diverse
student populations with demonstrated knowledge and implementations of
culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogies.
• Experience working in academic settings that are committed to diversity,
equity, and inclusion.
Note: RELI especially welcomes instructors who have some level of proficiency
in a language other than English and experience living and working outside of
the United States.
Successful candidates will be strong writers who demonstrate commitment to –
and excellence in – teaching at the college level. An advanced degree (e.g.,
M.A., M.F.A., Ed.D., or Ph.D.) is required.
Preferred qualifications include three or more years teaching composition or
other writing-intensive courses as instructor of record; experience teaching
English-language learners and/or international students; and demonstrated
commitment to the promotion of equity and inclusion in higher education.
