Description

  • Organisation/Company: CNRS
  • Research Field: Biological sciences Environmental science Geosciences
  • Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)
  • Application Deadline: 09/12/2021 23:59 - Europe/Brussels
  • Location: France › PARIS 05
  • Type Of Contract: Temporary
  • Job Status: Full-time
  • Hours Per Week: 35
  • Offer Starting Date: 01/01/2022
  • Eu Research Framework Programme: H2020
  • The main activities of the candidate will be as follows: - Implementation of these new multi model tool, - Its evaluation - Establishment of a balancing protocol adapted to this new formulation.

As part of the Holisoils project we are offering a 24 month Post Doctoral contract. The main scientific objectives and related tasks of the position will be to develop multi-model approaches using state-of-the-art models such as ECOSSE, SG, MILLENNIAL, CENTURY, AMG and ICBM to predict carbon dynamics in European forest soils. The objective is to take advantage of this multi-model approach to predict the median of the trajectories and the associated uncertainties. The multi-model tool will be evaluated against site observations collected in the Holisoils project. Once developed, this tool should be incorporated into a stakeholder-friendly tool that predicts European forest soil trajectories under different forest management options.

Europe's forests will be subject to major drought events in the future. The response of forests to these events is of paramount importance from a climatic point of view but also from an economic point of view for the European Union as forests are at the centre of several European policies (the EU Bio-economy Strategy, the EU's LULUCF Regulation, the EU Forest Strategy (2018), and the European Green Deal). Recent work has highlighted the importance of soil mesofauna on nutrient cycling and soil physical properties (García-Angulo et al., 2020) and a recent KEYLINK model has been developed to represent these aspects (Deckmyn et al. 2020). However, these mechanisms are not integrated into the surface scheme of climate models and therefore the response of forests to climate change is not properly represented in these models. The work will be carried out within the framework of the EU-funded Holisoils project led by the LUKE laboratory in Finland. The modelling aspects are the responsibility of IPSL and the work will be supervised by by a CNRS researcher with strong interactions with the project partners, particularly in the Netherlands and Spain.

Place of work : Lieu : Equipe Surface et Reservoirs du laboratoire de Géologie de l'ENS, 24 rue Lhomond, 75 005 Paris

    Eligibility criteria

    - Thesis in climate sciences, bio-geochemistry or soil sciences with a strong attraction for modeling. - Fortran skills required. - The candidate must have demonstrated his or her ability to communicate these results in scientific journals and international congresses.
