Researcher in Climate Change Attribution

Reporting to Dr Rupert Stuart-Smith, Senior Research Associate in Climate Science and the Law, the postholder will be a computationally proficient scientist who will work on attribution and projections of climate change impacts, with a particular focus on East Africa. Working within a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Oxford, the postholder will conduct scientific research that refines existing methods, sheds light on the impacts of climate change in an understudied region, and informs adaptation and legal responses to climate change impacts.

The post holder will work with the PI, colleagues at the University of Oxford, and collaborators at institutions including the African Population and Health Research Center to assess the impacts of climate change on agricultural yields, nutrition, and health in eastern Africa. This research will include analyses of the effects of climate change on existing and future impacts (attribution and projections). The post holder will contribute to the Visibilize4ClimateAction in East Africa Project funded by the Wellcome Trust

The successful candidate will primarily conduct analyses of the meteorological impacts of climate change but gain opportunities to work with interdisciplinary methods such as epidemiological and agricultural models. They will join a vibrant and growing research environment that builds on the University of Oxford's expertise in climate science, attribution science, and East African weather and climate change.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in climate science, physics, earth sciences, geography, mathematics, or other related field or nearing completion of a relevant PhD to be considered at Grade 6 with a commensurate adjustment in either the essential criteria, responsibilities or duties. Evidence of potential to produce high-quality research on climate change impacts during the tenure of the post. Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities. Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations published in high-quality journals. You will have ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research network at meetings.

The position is for an initial one year in duration, with the opportunity for extension.
