Description

Summary

This role supports bench research primarily in molecular and cellular biology. It supports research into the mechanisms underlying sickle cell disease pulmonary complications using animal models and cell culture.

Acute chest syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary dysfunction and oxygenation defects are the main focus areas of the research.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.
  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.
  • Successful candidates are expected to perform lab experiments and interpret the results.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • Develops and improves techniques for the lab.
  • Contributes to planning/design of studies.
  • Collects, enters, summarizes, and analyzes data. This includes receiving, processing, marking, and storing biologic samples from patients.
  • Collects samples and performs animal surgeries. Training can be provided by the PI.
  • Monitors results, detects, and reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications.
  • May assist in planning long or short-term goals/fiscal management.
  • Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
  • May assist with the publication of laboratory findings and research into future research projects.
  • Collaboration with other co-investigators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Salary $ 32,800.00 - $ 59,800.00 annually

    Qualifications

    Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • OR Bachelor's degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience
  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

  • At least a BS in biologic sciences or related disciplines.
  • Highly motivated applicants with background in pulmonary physiology.
  • Transfection using in vitro systems and use of siRNA in vivo.
  • Limited expertise in proteomics and performance of 2-D gels.
  • Experience in the following areas:

  • Standard molecular techniques, including ELISA, PCR, RNA and DNA isolations, and western blots,
  • Cell culture techniques and transfections,
  • Animal husbandry, genotyping, and minor procedures (e.g., sample collections, organ harvesting, tail snap, ear punch, injection and exposure)
  • Processing and storing human biologic samples such as blood and broncho-alveolar fluids.
  • Ability to prepare scientific data for manuscripts and oral presentation.

  • Laboratory Information

  • The methods used will include:

  • Nucleic acid analysis

  • DNA and RNA isolation,
  • PCR,
  • cloning,
  • qPCR,
  • Southern and Northern Blotting,
  • sequencing,
  • Genotyping,
  • miRNA pathway analysis,
  • FACS,
  • gel imaging,
  • flow cytometry (FACS),
  • chemiluminescent and ETBr stained gel imaging
  • Protein and substrate analysis including ELISA development.
  • Transfection using in vitro systems and use of siRNA in vivo.

  • This position also includes colony management of the humanized sickle cell disease and normal hemoglobin mice such as:

  • Tracking,
  • genotyping,
  • breeding,
  • weaning,
  • dealing with health-related issues of the mice.
  • Minor surgeries will be performed in this role. These will be in the form of:

  • sample collections,
  • tail snap,
  • ear punch,
  • inhalational exposure
  • administering medications via different routes among others
