  • Role Description Department

The post is for development of demonstrators and new technology to extend RoboStar technology to support the design and deployment of ROS applications. This will entail modelling in RoboSim and integrating automatically generated Rust or C code with ROS(2), so that it can be used to control simulated robots (e.g. in Webots / Gazebo) and/or physical robots (e.g. Pi-puck / TurtleBot3). There are some design decisions to be made about how this integration should be done (i.e. either as part of the Rust code generator itself, or using separate code that communicates with the Rust program). One of the applications to be considered is a swarm.

    Main purpose of the role:

  • To provide support to research project/s, undertaking research work within the overall programme and assisting with the day to day operation of the project/s
  • To undertake work, which may be as part of a research team, investigating a designated area of subject knowledge to promote further understanding
  • To contribute to the intellectual development of the project and plan own activities within the overall research effort
  • With the guidance of the project supervisor, to undertake a combination of literature searches/scholarly reading, desk and/or lab-based research, subject interviews, questionnaires/sampling or other research activity. Using specialist knowledge, techniques and/or instrumentation as required.
  • To document work appropriately and in accordance with research best practice.
  • To work closely with the project supervisor to prepare work for dissemination, presenting preliminary findings at meetings within the research group as appropriate.
  • Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
  • Has research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • RoboSim and its verification techniques, Simulation development, ROS, TurtleBots or e-pucks
  • Ability to undertake academic research. Examples may include preparing, setting up, conducting and recoding the outcome of experiments or field work, the development of questionnaires and conducting surveys
  • Ability to organise own research activities to agreed deadlines and quality standards
  • High level oral communication skills to enable the effective presentation of research progress and outcomes to key stakeholders
  • Excellent written communication in order to contribute effectively to the production of research reports and publications
  • This role is available on a fixed term basis from the 22nd Feburary 2023 until 30th April 2024
