Internal Recruitment No Working Title Research Technician Anticipated Hiring Range $37,788 - $41,788 Work Schedule Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm Job Location Raleigh NC Department Biochemistry About the Department

The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at NC State University conducts research in protein structure and function, metabolism in immune function and disease, and molecular basis of living chemical processes. We engage in innovative research that is internally and externally funded, publish high-impact peer-reviewed manuscripts, and administer graduate and undergraduate academic programs in biochemistry.

The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at NC State offers degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, in addition to a combined BS/MS program. Innovative research programs in the undergraduate and graduate curricula prepare students for advanced

studies in medical school, graduate school, or other post-graduate programs, or careers in biotechnology and biomedical industries, academia, or government.

Essential Job Duties

This position will assist in laboratory management and conduct experimental laboratory work. This position will be split 50/50 between two adjacent plant research labs.

We are searching for a candidate to fill a Research Technician role in the areas of plant molecular biology and breeding. The successful candidate will be involved in several different research projects with a general theme of finding novel ways to utilize plant science and agriculture to help our food systems deal with the effects of climate change and also find tools to help push toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy. This position will be part of two separate but related research groups at NC State in the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry.

The Doherty lab conducts plant molecular biology research with a focus on the plant circadian clock: a molecular time-keeping mechanism present in nearly all plants and animals. The lab is interested in determining how the circadian clock influences stress responses in plants with a focus on translating these findings to improve agriculture in a world with a quickly changing climate. Current projects are: Using computational models to infer and understand gene regulatory networks related to circadian-mediated stress responses, looking at the effects of microgravity on circadian regulation of gene expression and studying Rare Earth Element (REE) uptake and sequestration by various plants in an effort to bio-mine these valuable elements. Bio-mining is an exciting concept that allows essential and valuable elements to be extracted in an environmentally sustainable way, using fewer resources and for a lower cost. REEs are an important part of the future sustainable economy and essential to several different clean energy technologies including wind and solar electricity generation.

The Sartor lab is a newly founded lab and will be focusing research on an alternative species: Lemna gibba. Projects will be split between applied and basic research. The applied research will focus on turning L. gibba into an agriculturally relevant crop species. This will be done by breeding

novel varieties with a focus on bioproduct production, thus, making a new crop that will provide an alternative to petrochemical feedstocks with a goal of creating carbon-negative production processes that can be used as a tool to fight climate change. The basic research will

focus on computational modeling of gene regulatory networks and understanding how the networks are being re-programmed through artificial and natural selection and the role this plays in phenotypic variation.

The incumbent will be responsible for general laboratory management and will assist in experimental lab work for various plant biology projects.
