Position will maintain a satisfactory environment in the Animal Facility and Research Laboratory to meet all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines. Position will support the Coordinator of Animal Resources, Research Laboratory Coordinator and Principal Investigators as needed by being trained in all aspects of research operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess the knowledge, as well as the following skills and abilities or be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Must be comfortable working with various types of laboratory animals; must disclose to an Occupational Health medical professional any known and existing animal allergies; individuals to be in good physical condition since the position requires constant physical activity such as standing, walking, reaching, lifting, etc.
Required Qualifications
Work study eligible student in good standing at COMP-Northwest.
Preferred Qualifications
Interest in gaining laboratory research experience.

Essential Job Duties
Job Duty
Monitors and logs animal health, cleans or changes cages as needed, and other animal husbandry related duties.
Percentage Of Time 15 Job Duty
Performs routine cleaning, maintenance and safety checks within the vivarium and research laboratory Utilizes vivarium and research lab equipment properly to aid in all job related tasks.
Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duty
Assists supervisor in maintaining facility and recordkeeping to be in compliance with WesternU IACUC standards, USDA Guidelines, Good Laboratory Practices and other applicable animal welfare regulations and requirements.
Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duty
Assists principal investigators and coordinators with any special research tasks in accordance with protocols, experiments and projects.
Percentage Of Time 24 Job Duty
Assists with maintaining inventory, ordering and processing incoming supplies and maintenance of major equipment in the vivarium and research laboratory.
Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duty
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to grasp laboratory objects and equipment. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and stoop. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. These vision demands are needed in the lab, especially when using a microscope.

Duties of the position are normally performed in a typical laboratory setting. While performing the duties in this setting the employee is regularly exposed to disinfectants and other toxic or caustic chemicals, lab animal allergens, occasionally exposed to moving heavy pieces of equipment (racks, hoods), and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in this setting is usually moderate.
