Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. The Orthodontics discipline focuses on the treatment of irregularities of the teeth, jaws, and bite relationship in children and adults.

Position Summary


The Research Technician will be responsible for conducting various laboratory experiments that have an emphasis on biomaterials and craniofacial skeletal muscle cell biology. The Research Technician's primary responsibility will be to carry out the goals of the research associated with understanding the role of the craniofacial skeletal muscles in dentofacial deformity and those associated with craniofacial skeletal muscle engineering approaches. To achieve these goals, duties will include performing immunocytochemistry, cell culture, assays, including but not limited to ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, and RT-PCR.The Research Technician will be expected to take detailed notes on each experiment, enter data and results in figure or tabular form, as well as assess accuracy, validity, and integrity of data. The research technician will also assist other laboratory personnel, graduate students, and volunteer researches as needed. In addition, the research technician will contribute to the organization of the laboratory by helping keep accurate inventory, restocking laboratory supplies and assisting with maintenance of lab equipment.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The successful candidate will have the following:Recent experience with molecular biology techniques and small animal husbandry – Demonstrated ability to assist with general laboratory organization and maintenance – Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to execute experimental protocols – Ability to conduct routine laboratory tests and procedures according to a research protocol – Ability to mix and/or apply chemicals and other materials – Ability to tabulate, organize, and record data – Ability to operate equipment and instruments, and to perform minor equipment repairs – Ability to maintain laboratory inventory – Ability to follow instructions through a standard work process, perform routine and repetitious tasks

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g. biology, biochemistry, molecular biology) – Experience with cell culture and animal handling and experience recording/entering research data into electronic data capture systems
