The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers
undergraduate degrees in civil engineering, construction engineering, and
environmental engineering. Seven graduate programs are offered in computing &
systems, construction engineering, water resources and environmental
engineering, structural engineering and mechanics, transportation systems and
materials, and geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering.

Essential Job Duties
The Harris lab works in the areas of environmental microbiology. Current
projects in the Harris lab focus on evaluating environmental contamination in
association with natural disasters; bacterial and viral contamination in
drinking water and surfaces in both developed and developing countries; and
effectiveness of practical interventions to reduce exposure to pathogens
through water, food, or surface contamination.
The Research Technician will support the laboratory and field efforts to
achieve the research objectives in the Harris group within the Environmental
Engineering laboratories. This includes benchtop microbiological analysis
(e.g., cell culture, qPCR and ddPCR, nucleic acid extractions), collecting
field samples (both domestically and abroad),maintaining biological
cultures, performing laboratory management activities (e.g., development and
maintenance of safety plans, ordering equipment and supplies, equipment
maintenance), and training undergraduate workers in relevant microbiological

Other Required Qualifications
Experience with microbiological techniques (including anaerobic)
routinely used in environmental and/or clinical sciences.
Direct experience with nucleic acid extractions and digital droplet PCR
for wastewater-based surveillance of infectious diseases.
Master's degree in microbiology, laboratory technology or environmental
sciences or related field
Prior experience working in an analytical laboratory environment.
Required License or Certification
Valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of
