The Department of Biological Sciences, within the College of Sciences at NC State University, is dedicated to research and teaching in a broad range of aspects of the biological sciences. The Department has strong undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs and substantial extramural support to develop and maintain integrative research programs. Additionally, the Department partners with other life sciences units across the University to enhance its mission to conduct interdisciplinary research and training programs.

The Zakas lab studies the genetics of developmental evolution. We are interested in determining the genetic basis for developmental traits under selection. We use the marine polychaete, Streblospio benedicti as a model for understanding life-history evolution. S. benedicti females produce two distinct types of offspring with different developmental programs. Our research focuses on comparative oogenesis, embryology, and larval biology of the two developmental types. In this system we can integrate aspects of ecology, evolution, and genomics to answer questions about how development evolves.

Essential Job Duties

Responsibilities for the Research Technician position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Animal care and maintenance
  • Lab organization
  • Performing detailed documentation of lab protocols
  • Some purchasing
  • Administrative tasks.
  • Assist the PI and lab trainees with experiments including molecular biology techniques (such as PCR, library-prep, etc.), live-imaging, and data analysis.
  • Inclusiveness and diversity are critical to the success of the College of Sciences and the University. The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all groups.

    This is a time-limited position with an expected duration of up to 2 years.

    Minimum Experience/Education

    Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

    Other Required Qualifications

    Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, self-motivation, enthusiasm to learn new techniques, communication with a team, and careful record keeping are essential.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. in biology, genetics or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a lab setting.
  • Experience with research design such as literature review and problem- solving.
