The candidate will work in conjunction with the head administrator and Dr.
Susan Lovett to enact the research being performed in the lab. In an effort to
meet the specific aims of the two grants listed above the technician hired
will be responsible for the following range of laboratory techniques as well
as work in conjunction with the head administrator of the lab this person will
assist with overall lab maintenance.:
Work with two main organisms of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae
to fulfill the specific aims of the grants. Time: 65%
Sub-Function 1A: Preparation of plasmid and chromosomal DNA, manipulation
of DNA by restriction/ligation cloning, site directed mutagenesis,
creation of gene disruptions, gene rearrangements, gene deletions,
creation of P1 lysates, and performing P1 transductions.
Sub-Function 1B: Performing experiments in a 96 well format using
mulichannel pipettes and a multiplate reader.
Sub-Function 1C: Growing cultures in either one or both organism listed
Sub-Function 1D: Sending samples away for sequencing and freezing strain
Function 2: Administrator Duties.
Sub-Function 2A: Day to day monitoring and guiding undergraduates lab
technicians. Maintaining a constant base of undergraduate lab technicians.
Part of the Hiring Process of undergraduate lab technicians but can not
enact hiring or firing. Ensure the quality of reagents and supplies being
produced by undergraduate lab technicians.
Sub-Function 2B: Contribute to the overall set up and structure of the
laboratory, Sending and receiving important biological samples. Ensure
proper sterilization and disposal of biological hazards. Time 10%
Sub-Function 2C: Acting as both chemical safety officer and submitter of
radiation survey reports.
Sub-Function 2D: Monitor lab inventory and supplies and request supplies
through ordering request process.
Sub-Function 2E: Being aware and compliant with any new institutional
mandates regarding laboratory operations.
Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science required
