Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical duties in the Electron Microscopy Lab involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

Work Performed

Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests.

Obtain, prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examination.

Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.

Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment.

Review work of lower level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.

Develop charts and graphs for scientific publications

Maintain database for raw data and organize/prepare scientific data for analysis by the PI

Assist with performing increasingly complex or multi-day experiments

Confer with the principal investigator and/or Lab Manager to develop initial plans for research experiments

Work with vendor for ordering and procuring quotes for lab equipment and supplies

Department Specific Duties:

Prepare samples and advise on their collection, preparation and experimental design; collect and analyze data from them; and advise principal investigators from different departments on how to present data in publications.

Handle different types of fixed specimens from viruses and bacteria to mammalian tissues and have considerable knowledge of their varied ultrastructure and idiosyncrasies to be able to analyze specimen preparation quality and changes in status due to experimental procedures.

Develop new policies and SOPs and keep careful notes of procedures and experiments. Prepare reports and assist researchers to interpret analyses. Help formulate needs of the laboratory and achieve the scientific goals.

Work directly with students and principal investigators to ensure that the right research questions are asked and that the procedures to answer those questions are appropriate. Manage the research projects.

Work with graduate, medical, and postdoctoral students, as well as faculty and do this with little oversight from the director.

Work independently in implementing complex research procedures.

Operate electron microscopes, ultramicrotomes, and other complex and expensive ancillary instrumentation independently of assistance from the manager or director.

Teach many of our clients to use some of this equipment themselves.

Organize meetings or conferences to keep laboratory personnel and users informed on procedures, problems, or changing situations.

Order and maintain supplies and reagents.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work generally requires skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, Psychology or other science related scientific field program.

Experience:

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
