This position is limited term (2 years of grant funding) with the opportunity to extend the position if funding is available in support of applied vegetable research in Georgia.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

FLSA Non-Exempt Job Family FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred; however, will consider an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Pesticide Applicator's License or ability to get one
  • Position Summary

    This position will assist with the field trials related to field evaluation of broccoli and related crops as well as field and greenhouse trials associated with organic production practices in vegetables. Duties will include land preparation, planting, irrigating, spraying, data collection, harvesting, etc. The incumbent will work independently and be familiar with the equipment and practices used in production agriculture.

    The incumbent will be travelling from Athens to Tifton (UGA, Tifton Campus), Blairsville (GA Mountain Research and Education Center), Lyons (Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center) and other locations in the state when necessary. The incumbent will work with county faculty in effectively conducting on-farm field trials, implementing, and maintaining programs, and collecting and analyzing data obtained

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Primary responsibilities of this position will be related to field evaluation of broccoli and related crops as well as field and greenhouse trials associated with organic production practices in vegetables.

    Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities

    The individual will be responsible for field and laboratory work that will include but not be limited to land and plot prep (tilling, spraying, fertilizer application etc.) variety evaluation, fertilizer and irrigation trials, strategies to improve weed management in organic systems, nitrogen mineralization from organic nutrient sources, high tunnel and greenhouse production of vegetables.

    Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities

    Other duties also involve application of pesticides (fungicides, fumigants, insecticides) using tractor mounted or a back-pack sprayer as well as maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in field plots.

    Expected to assist graduate students with research as well. The individual will be responsible for working with technical staff in the Department of Horticulture and with student workers to manage on-farm and on-station projects. The incumbent will work with county faculty in effectively conducting on-farm field trials, implementing, and maintaining programs, and collecting and analyzing data obtained
