RESEARCH TECHNICIAN IN GRASSLANDS SOILS

Lancaster Environment Centre Salary: £22,847 to £26,341 Closing Date: Tuesday 30 November 2021 Interview Date: To be confirmed Reference: N2776

Applications are invited for a UKRI-funded 4-months technician position to investigate how land degradation affects soil physical and chemical properties key to soil health and multifunctionality. This research is part of the large- multidisciplinary project Restoring Degraded African Landscapes (ReDEAL), led by Professor Mariana Rufino and is funded under the theme of Agri-Systems Research to Enhance Livelihoods in Developing Countries, part of the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The research study is largely lab- based and will involve a variety of soil analysis and interpretation of the impacts of land degradation on soil processes that underpin the grasslands and ultimately livestock productivity.

You will join a research team, led by Professor Rufino, studying aspects of productivity and resilience of agricultural systems, and will work closely with Professor John Quinton and Professor Richard Bardgett at The University of Manchester, and researchers from The International Livestock Research Institute and the University of Kabianga in Kenya. The position is available to scientists with a PhD in Soil science or Biological sciences and preference will be given to those with experience in field and laboratory studies of plant-soil interactions, carbon and nutrient cycling and the connections to land degradation processes.

We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis. The department holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in Higher Education and research.

The position is effective from the 1st December 2021 and is available for 4 months. Informal enquiries to Professor Mariana Rufino (email: m.rufino1@lancaster.ac.uk or Telephone 01524 592819).
