Job Summary The Seagrass Biology and Ecology Lab at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a Research Technician II position. The position will be based out of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, MS. The successful candidate will assist with existing laboratory and field-based projects to monitor seagrass distribution and condition, assess seagrass nutrient content, and evaluate seagrass habitat use. This is a temporary (up to 12 weeks), full-time (40h/week) position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with seagrass identification
  • Assist with seagrass morphological measurements
  • Collect and process benthic cores
  • Collect and prepare seagrass plants for nutrient and genetic analysis
  • Assist with field collection of seagrass and fish to quantify habitat use in seagrass beds
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university or three years' experience. Applicants must be able to work full-time (40 hours per week).

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience working from small boats, in shallow (<10 feet) coastal, marine waters, and in a laboratory setting.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Biology, or a related field and a strong interest in marine science, aquatic botany, or similar disciplines. Possession of a valid driver's license is preferred, but not required.
