Research in the Malaria Collaboratory focuses on answering important clinical questions to prevent, diagnose, and treat malaria parasites. We marshal a variety of approaches to do so, including molecular epidemiology, experimental genetics, clinical trials, and functional genomics, primarily using specimens and data collected in field studies with partners in sub-Saharan Africa. https: // sites.duke.edu/taylorlab/.

Research Technician II

We are seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill a key role as a Research Technician II in the Malaria Collaboratory. The assays performed by the Research Technician II will contribute to investigation of the molecular epidemiology of P. falciparum transmission.

Responsibilities

  • · Perform molecular and biological procedures including extraction of P. falciparum DNA from clinical isolates and large-scale PCR of targets within that parasite DNA.
  • · Assist with processing various biological specimen types for use in assays.
  • · Implement and analyze assigned experiments and convey the results with the team.
  • · Maintain a current and well-detailed laboratory notebook and data management plan for all experiments performed.
  • · Assist with general laboratory tasks such as database management, media preparation, restocking of laboratory supplies, preparation of buffers and solutions, and other basic tasks.
  • · Review laboratory methods and protocols, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
  • · Review work of lower level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.
  • · Perform other related duties incidental to the work described when requested.
  • Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Basic skills in molecular laboratory techniques with technical precision.
  • Laboratory experience w ith DNA and micro pipetting is required and facility with multi-chan nel pipetting is preferred.
  • Must be detail-ori ented, well organized with strong communication skills, and have abi lity to work well with a lively, interactive team.

    Minimum Qualifications Education

    Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
