Occupational Summary

The research technician will design and perform experiments, analyze results, and assist in managing the laboratory of Arnaldo Carreira-Rosario at Duke University. Performed experiments will be related to ongoing as well as new projects developed by the candidate with the guidance of more experienced colleagues. The candidate will receive training directly from the principal investigator. Contributions will merit authorship in resulting publications.

The research project focuses on uncovering neuronal populations that become active early in the life of an animal and dissecting their function. This project uses fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as an experimental system. The research involves the following techniques:

  • Imaging of neural activity using fluorescent microscopy
  • Analysis of live imaging data
  • Manipulation of neural activity
  • Fly genetics
  • The predicted time allocation is:

  • Designing and performing experiments (40%): This includes planning and strategizing experiments, collecting data, and ensuring documentation of results.
  • Analyzing results (40%): The candidate is expected to spend time analyzing the experimental results. This includes processing and organizing the data for visualization and statistical analysis to draw conclusions.
  • Helping manage the laboratory (20%): This may include maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, organizing and cataloging samples, assisting with administrative tasks such as record-keeping and inventory management, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain research experience and publish in preparation for graduate or med school. It is preferred that the candidate commits for two years, with a minimum commitment of one year requested. Should the candidate be interested, this position has the potential to extend beyond two years, offering the opportunity to transition into a more permanent role within the lab.
