Occupational Summary: The Duke Lemur Center is a non-invasive primate research and education facility located on 80 acres of Duke Forest. The Research- Education Technician position will require a unique combination of skills that will support daily research and outreach components of the DLC's mission. Research department duties will include, but are not limited to: data entry, administrative support, biological sample banking, assisting in live animal research, and a wide variety of tasks that contribute to maintain compliance with USDA, AAALAC and Duke University's IACUC guidelines.

Work Performed

  • Assist researchers with animal needs (transport, restraint, cage cleaning & set up, shifting, etc.)
  • Assist veterinary department with research requests involving animal capture, blood draws, necropsy, and monitoring sedation and anesthesia
  • Maintain and assist with the completion and submission of DLC tissue and cadaver request forms
  • Manage the tissue and cadaver freezers (including updating the monthly inventory)
  • Assist the Veterinary Department with splitting the samples for research and DLC use
  • Process tissue and cadaver requests
  • Prepare and oversee specimens for shipment (this may involve obtaining dry ice on campus and delivery of sample to the airport)
  • Report signs of disease and/or behavioral problems through observation and examination of urine, feces, and blood
  • Assist in routine and emergency medical treatments such as surgery, palpations, sexing, bleeding, vaginal smears, etc.
  • Perform routine tasks to provide assistance to researchers or research projects. This may include weighing animals, obtaining specimens, and observing behavioral patterns.
  • Transport animals, supplies and materials; operate motor vehicle as needed.
  • Coordinate research activities with the routine demands of colony management
  • Ensure that all equipment/supplies used by researchers are properly cleaned, stored and maintained
  • Provide enrichment for and assure proper use of animals consistent with the policies of the DLC
  • Minimum Qualifications Education

    Work requires an Associate's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other science related scientific field.
