Since 1901, the faculty, staff and students of the Department of Horticultural Science have been providing innovative teaching, research and outreach to the citizens of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. Our research and extension programs are recognized worldwide for their contributions to applied horticultural production and to discovery science. We generate and extend knowledge about fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and landscape design for the purpose of increasing food security and food safety, sustaining the environment, enhancing economic vitality, and improving the quality of life for individuals and their communities.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Technician position will support research and extension processes in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field. A key function of the position will be to provide primary support to current field-based research and extension projects in the area of horticulture that involves vegetable cultural management and postharvest practices. The position will generally involve the maintenance and optimization of plant growth in field plots, scouting for pests, data record acquisition, and its organization, preparing data for statistical analysis, and summary of results.

At present, this position is time-limited for two (2) years, with a maximum time-limited status of 3 years.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • One year of directly related experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level course experience.
  • Six months experience with cucurbits and sweet potato program
  • Required License or Certification

  • Valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • The position will be required to drive program vehicles to research stations to work on field trials.
