Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for the Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) within the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Research Operations Assistant Director, the Research Teaching Specialist III will conduct research activities in diagnostic microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory. May be responsible for the management of a small-sized laboratory area. Assists the Principal Investigator with budgetary, training and administrative responsibilities, income revenue streams.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria M. Tuberculosis requiring work in BSL3 facilities and extracts DNA/RNA as needed.
  • Performs detailed colony forming unit and DNA/RNA measurements of strain stock cultures.
  • Performs validation studies on current and new diagnostics/systems including limit of detection, inclusivity, exclusivity, and interference studies.
  • Identifies shortcomings and benefits of diagnostic systems through systematic experimentations relevant for each new diagnostic.
  • Assists in the development and testing of modified or new uses for diagnostic systems understudy.
  • Makes detailed progress reports and report slides of studies as required.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
  • Experience in microbiological and bimolecular techniques with BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial pathogens.
  • Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with virulent M. tuberculosis.
  • Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Sitting at computer for length of time; lifting of charts approx. 3-5 lbs. up to 25 lbs.

  • Candidate must successfully complete a security risk assessment by the U.S. Department of Justice, and will be enrolled in the personnel reliability program, and be approved for access to select biological agents and toxins by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as a condition of employment.

    Immunization Requirements
