Position Summary

The Animal Models Core at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a molecular and cellular biologist to join our team of scientists using cutting-edge technologies for the design, generation and analysis of genetically modified rodent and cell line models. Responsibilities will include design and production of CRISPR reagents and gene targeting vectors, BAC recombineering, conducting genome editing procedures in mouse embryonic stem cells and other cell lines, and other molecular biology work such as PCR genotyping and Southern blotting. The candidate will work in a team environment to ensure that animal model development activities are coordinated and optimally aligned with the needs of the clients.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Excellent scientific skills, teamwork, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills are necessary, as is flexibility and innovation to continually improve and optimize model generation capabilities. The ability to independently perform and troubleshoot technically-challenging procedures is required, as are excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple tasks with a high level of accuracy, independence, and flexibility. Strong oral and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment are required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

BS or MS in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, or a related field is preferred. Knowledge and experience with CRISPR and recombineering technology for BAC and plasmid manipulation. The ideal candidate will have experience in culture and genetic manipulation of stem (ES) cells. Ability to work with rodents and experience with animal colony management and genotyping is also preferred. Extensive molecular biology experience, including gene cloning, PCR and DNA purification, is preferred. The ideal candidate has experience in mammalian cell culture, transfection, cryopreservation and cellular analysis, with excellent sterile technique.
