The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology was formed in July 2012 through the merger of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology. The combined department brings together two strong traditions of excellence in basic science and translational research, and in pre- and postdoctoral training, including undergraduate, graduate, and medical education. The Histology Research Core (HRC) is an open core within the department providing histology services to the UNC community and beyond. The core specializes in frozen and paraffin embedding and sectioning, special staining, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to support the Histology Research Core where the primary responsibility will be performing various histology procedures for research projects. This position will work with a dynamic group of faculty and researchers to process samples using a customized approach. This position will communicate clearly and tactfully with coworkers and clients exhibiting diplomacy and providing excellent customer service at all times.

More specifically this position will serve as an expert in a variety of techniques including paraffin and frozen sample preparation, operating cryostats and microtomes, special staining, and performing immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization assays with minimal supervision. This position will also include laboratory management operations such as ordering supplies, and preparing, maintaining and organizing inventories and project data files.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The ideal candidate will display an expert knowledge of preparing, sectioning and staining tissues using a variety of techniques, operates cryostats and microtomes independently, performs quality control measures, understands project research goals in order to provide researchers with appropriate support, is proficient with immunohistochemical procedures and theory, quickly identify problems and troubleshoots with minimal supervision. Must be able to modify and adapt techniques and procedures to fit various researchers' needs and have the ability to coordinate multiple concurrent assignments in order to meet deadlines.

The ability to prepare, maintain and organize inventories, project data files, computer files, and databases of antibodies, protocols, chemicals, reagents, buffers, stains and health and safety requirements is essential. The successful candidate must have experience contributing to preparation of experimental protocols and reports.

The ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with coworkers and clients exhibiting diplomacy and providing excellent customer service at all times is also essential.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Bachelors or Masters degree in a related scientific discipline with significant knowledge and proficiency in histological procedures and lab management.
