Organizational Unit Overview
The department of Physiology in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina
University seek a highly motivated and qualified research laboratory
technician to assist with experiments designed to investigate the biochemical,
molecular, cellular, and functional effects of myocardial infarction. The
incumbent will possess the ability to manage projects, plan and execute
experiments alone or in conjunction with others, and modify/develop procedures
as needed. Duties include but are not limited to data collection,
documentation, and analysis as well as laboratory and equipment maintenance,
safety, and management. The incumbent will need to demonstrate and model
effective communication, mental concentration, self-motivation, and
troubleshooting skills. Work may also include the training and supervision of
staff, students and others in performing specific techniques/experiments and
willingness to meet on-call obligations as needed. A science background and
experience with a combination of techniques such as colony management,
processing rodent tissues for western blotting, ELISAs, histology and
immunohistochemistry and imaging, qPCR, cell culture, ex vivo isolated
organelle, cell, and metabolic assays, and mass spectrometry is preferred.
Experience with statistical methods, construction of graphical images, and
data interpretation as well as budgeting and researching pertinent information
is also preferred and the ability to draw inferences and participation in
scientific writing is desirable.
A lab technician position is open to a candidate who is interested in
conducting scientific research in a basic science laboratory. A successful
candidate will possess the ability to plan and execute experiments alone or in
conjunction with others, optimize and modify procedures as needed, data
collection, strict documentation, data analysis, laboratory maintenance and
management, instrument calibration and management, ordering, and project
management. The employee will need to demonstrate and model effective mental
concentration, self-motivation, and troubleshooting skills. Work will include
the training and supervision of staff, students, and other in performing
specific techniques/experiments and on laboratory environmental and chemical
safety. A science background and experience with techniques such as western
blotting, histology and immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR, and cell
culture are desired.
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or
equivalent combination of training and experience.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Graduation from a four-year college and 3 years of experience. The ideal
candidate will hold an undergraduate or masters degree in Physiology,
Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, Immunology, and/or related field.
