Strongly preferred: BS with major in biological science or laboratory animal related discipline. Self-motivated applicant who has lab experience and skills in handling small animals is preferred.

Primary Purpose of Position

To perform non-invasive imaging of tissue specimens in studies involving immunological disease, bone generation, genetic and respiratory diseases. The research technician will perform in vivo imaging, anesthetic induction, maintenance and monitoring of scientific experiments; animal colony maintenance; and laboratory health and safety management. This includes performing supporting biological techniques, such as buffer preparation animal tissue handling; and disease monitoring in small animal models of human disease; maintaining the animal colony including husbandry and conducting routine lab safety procedures based on university (IACUC) and EHS guidelines

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Animal Sciences is one of four departments in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Consistent with North Carolina A&T's land-grant mission of teaching, research, and outreach, the departmental team of highly qualified and enthusiastic faculty and staff provide first class instruction that leads to B.S. degree in animal science, laboratory animal science, or to a concentration in animal industry (https:// www. ncat.edu/academics/schools- colleges1/saes/academics/anisci/indexe.html). Department of Animal Sciences faculty conduct research related to farm, laboratory, and companion animal species. North Carolina A&T State University is a premier agricultural school producing the third largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Science in the nation. The appointee will have access to a range of animal and infrastructure resources including a state of the art laboratory animal facility and research and many collaborative opportunities within the Department and with colleagues in other units.

Work Hours 8 am - 5 pm MF Weekends and Holidays

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Required Competency Laboratory Management

Duties

Responsible for LARU MRI equipment and operation. Attend and master training programs offered by company. Support and lead training of researchers, students with imaging work. Run samples and provide analysis. Manage data file transfers, organization and accessibility. Coordinate scheduling and accounting tasks associated with equipment. Perform preventive maintenance.

Required Competency Conducting Experiments/Procedures

Duties

Conduct daily health surveillance and report findings to facility manager and veterinary staff using written or electronic media in accordance with applicable standard operating procedures.

Provide husbandry to laboratory animals, maintain animal inventory records and room maintenance.

Record, and may perform facility sanitation in animal facilities.

Responsible for scheduling specific manipulations or duty rosters, perform or assist in surgical procedures, assist in post-operative care cases, collect research specimens or critical data points, or manage health assessment/health assurance programs for a variety of species.

Follow the regulatory requirements as outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act.

Perform written and oral communication with research staff as necessary. Perform work scheduled as assigned by the LARU Facility Manager or Operations Manager, Veterinary staff, or designee for specific areas of the animal facilities.

Required to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.

Required Competency Knowledge - Professional/Scientific

Duties

General relationship with ERC-RMB Center and College of Engineering (BMEN) Be an ambassador for the NC A&T's research capabilities specifically as it is related to work needed by ERC-RMB, and maintain frequent meetings with ERC-RMB personnel, perform projects and collaboration with industry and other academia.

Train students, post-docs, and scientists from non-animal background.

Assist classroom instructors to develop and implement modules utilizing in vivo CT.
