Description

The Play & Learning Across a Year (PLAY) Project, funded by NIH and directed by Principal Investigators Drs. Karen Adolph and Catherine Tamis-LeMonda at New York University and Rick Gilmore at Penn State University, invites applications for several 2- to 5-year Research Scientist positions. The PLAY Project is an innovative research initiative involving 65 PIs from 47+ sites across the US and Canada engaged in a synergistic and collaborative approach to behavioral science—all shared openly with the research community on Databrary.org. The completely video-based protocols and annotations ensure transparency, reproducibility, reuse, and provide a springboard for extension to new populations. The data focus on 1000+ infants and mothers from English- and/or Spanish-speaking households video recorded during 1 hour of everyday activity in the home—the main context for infant learning and development. Participants will be drawn from geographically and economically diverse rural, suburban, and urban regions. The corpus will include fully transcribed and coded videos, spanning domains of language, gesture, locomotion, emotion, gender, object play; video tours of the home; decibel recordings of ambient noise; parent reports of vital information, including infant receptive and expressive vocabulary, parent and child health, infant temperament, media use, locomotor history, and gender socialization; and detailed geo-coded demographic information.

The Research Scientist will work as part of a larger team housed at New York University to guide and shape the procedures and workflows of language-focused aspects of data collection, transcription, and coding and train and oversee staff at NYU. Significant opportunities for professional and scientific advancements in developmental science, language development, and collaborative research are available. Scientists will have opportunities for publications and presentations designed to communicate the novel aspects of the PLAY project for transforming scientific practices and for communicating findings about language development, developmental cascades, and environmental influences. Research Scientists will work with the PIs, project team, and PLAY “launch group” members to develop and implement transformative strategies and document best practices for handling collection of language measures and transcription. Research duties include overseeing coders and transcribers; monitoring ongoing data collection and research progress; and communicating research findings.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a PhD or ABD in psychology, or related field, a strong research background, and research expertise on the development of language and communication (including infant-directed speech in mother, language development in infants, gestural communication). Experience transcribing and coding language using CLAN, SALT, or Datavyu from video are highly desirable. The ideal candidate must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Preferred start date June 2019.
